Have you ever binged the Bible?

Have you ever binged the Bible?

Ok. That was a flagrant click-bait question. Sorry. But what I’m getting at is something that God’s been on my case about at the start of this new year. He’s led me to Isaiah 55. Then Psalm 33:6, then Psalm 19 and the message has been pretty clear: “Get back into my Word.”

Earlier this week as I sat and thought about this tugging from God I realised that it’s been a long time since I’ve read the whole bible. Not just the bits I like – my playlist – but the whole thing.

And I thought maybe it’s time to download one of those read-the-bible-in-a-year plans. So I did. I’m fully aware that this is going to sound very suspiciously like a soon to fail New Year’s resolution but I thought I’d invite you to join me in my New Year’s optimism.

I’m using Bible in One Year with Nicky and Pippa Gumbel. https://bibleinoneyear.org. It’s nice to have someone else puts the texts for the day together and bring some insight.

If I think it’s a lot of reading I remind myself of the time I spend in my newsfeed each day and, well, my argument becomes a little foolish.

If you’re still umming and ahhing take a look at this little list of promises from Ps. 19.

The law of the Lord is perfect,

refreshing the soul.

The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,

making wise the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right,

giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the Lord are radiant,

giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure,

enduring forever.

The decrees of the Lord are firm,

and all of them are righteous.

Refreshed soul. Wisdom for the simple. Joy to my heart. Light to my eyes. Sign me up!
